Lake Odessa, MI (Wednesday, May 1, 2019) - The month of May for the American Ethanol Late Model Tour (AELMT) is one that will see four straight weeks of racing action, in three different states, and over half a dozen tracks. The excitement begins this Saturday when the Tour returns to Montpelier, Indiana’s, Montpelier Motor Speedway, for the Indiana Ethanol Producers 40.
Last year, the AELMT made their first ever trip to Montpelier, marking the first appearance for Late Models at the Speedway in over a decade, and the first ever trip for the Tour. Over thirty competitors checked in for a shot to write their name in the history books as the first AELMT winner from Montpelier.
Travis Stemler and Eric Spangler lead the field to green, and Eric Spangler jumped out to the early lead. However, ninth place starter Rusty Schlenk was on a tear, looking to bring himself to the front. On lap 23 Schlenk showed his nose to Spangler coming off the fourth corner, before driving deep into turn number one to take the lead down the back stretch. Spangler attempted a similar move into turns three and four, but could not complete the pass. From there, Schlenk drove on to win the event over Spangler, Duane Chamberlain, Steve Casebolt, and Dona Marcoullier.
The 40 lap main event also served as the 2018 season opener, meaning everyone was looking for a chance to come out of the event as the points leader, and wanting to flex their muscle early in the season. This year will hardly be different, as the AELMT hasn’t raced since the season opener back on March 31st at LaSalle Speedway. This Saturday will mark just the second race of the 2019 season, and the event holds similar importance to the 2018 race - the feature winner on Saturday, is likely to propel themselves onto the top of the points standings, hoping to be en route to the $10,000 prize at the end of the season.
Gates open at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, with Hot Laps getting underway at 5:00 p.m. with American Ethanol Qualifying to follow. The first American Ethanol Green Flag of the night will fly around 6:30 p.m.
